Since its release back in 2004, World of Warcraft remained a definitive MMORPG and kept players captivated. New expansions were released every few years to keep players engaged and introduce new mechanics, races, raids and dungeons, new locations and much more. From the Classic WoW to the latest Dragonflight expansion, the game progressed massively, not only introducing new massive areas but also deepening the lore. Let’s take a look at the evolution of one of the most-played MMORPGS through the years.

Classic WoW

The year 2004 was the beginning of an era for World of Warcraft. Blizzard launched an epic vast world inspired by the rich lore of the original Warcraft game, which was loved by many players, and built its success on it. Gamers immersed themselves in the fantasy universe and embarked on an adventure to the massive continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. They completed epic quests, explored dungeons, and formed alliances. The game had a big focus on grinding, and long dungeon runs, and put emphasis on teamwork.

The original Azeroth map was already pretty expansive, but it was relatively small compared to what came out in the next expansions. Still, getting around the map took ages, as travel methods, like flight paths and mounts, were very slow, and flying wasn’t yet available. Many players embraced the challenge, but others sought ways to optimize their gameplay, including using services like a WoW boost to speed up levelling and dungeon runs. The ‘vanilla’ experience, as players call Classic WoW, was the beginning of a successful two-decade stretch and solidified WoW as the king of MMORPGs.

The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King

Not stopping at the initial success, Blizzard decided to expand the world further. In 2007, they released a new expansion – The Burning Crusade, where players ventured beyond Azeroth and into a new continent called Outland. The expansion also introduced two new races, the ultimately cool looking Blood Elves and the mystic Draenei, along with flying mounts, bringing more speed to travelling and making navigating in the game world a bit more simple.

Just a year later, in 2008, one of WoW’s most beloved expansions – Wrath of the Lich King, was released. Azeroth map was further expanded with Northrend, which offered breathtaking zones and the highly anticipated showdown with Arthas, the Lich King. This expansion also introduced the game’s first hero class – the Death Knight and made raiding more accessible to casual players, shaping WoW’s future raid philosophy.

Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria

The next big game update, called Cataclysm, was released in 2010. It completely reshaped Azeroth, changing landscapes and levelling experiences forever. The destruction caused by the deadly dragon Deathwing led to a reworked world, making it easier for new players to explore and do quests. Travelling became even more convenient, with flight becoming available in more areas, and a powerful artefact – the Heart of Azeroth, became an integral part of the game’s mechanics in future expansions.

A couple of years later, in 2012, Mists of Pandaria was released, which took a different direction, and expanded the map further with Pandaria – a land filled with ancient mysteries. A new race of Pandaren was added along with the Monk class. Looking rather cute and cuddly, Pandaren proved themselves to be mighty warriors and won the hearts of many players. Mists of Pandaria focused heavily on exploration, storytelling, and faction-based warfare. It also introduced Challenge Mode dungeons.

Warlords of Draenor and Legion

Players had to wait another couple of years before the next expansion, Warlords of Draenor, came out in 2014. Initially, players were not particularly happy with it, as it was struggling with content pacing. However, the expansion introduced Garrisons, a personal base-building feature that many players enjoyed.

Legion, released in 2016, on the other hand, made a triumphant comeback. A new Demon Hunter class was introduced along with Artifact Weapons. It also emphasized large-scale world quests and dynamic events, keeping players busy in the open world.

Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands

Following the established release schedule, Battle for Azeroth was released in 2018. It brought the faction conflict back to the forefront while expanding the Heart of Azeroth, a customizable necklace that empowered players throughout the expansion. Warfronts and Island Expeditions provided new PvE experiences, and the storyline set the stage for the transition into the Shadowlands.

Highly anticipated Shadowlands came out in 2020 and took players beyond the mortal realm into the afterlife, introducing Covenants, soul-binding mechanics, and the ever-changing rogue-like dungeon, Torghast. However, many players felt restricted by complex progression systems, leading the game designers to consider a different approach for future expansions.

Dragonflight

In 2022, Dragonflight was released and brought major changes to the game’s core mechanics. It introduced a vast new continent on the Azeroth map Dragonflight – the Dragon Isles. Dragon Isles became home to the new playable race and class – the Dracthyr Evokers. This expansion, like Mists of Pandaria, focused heavily on freedom of movement. And dragon riding ability finally offered an exhilarating way to travel the ever-expanding vast world.

Secrets of Azeroth became a major in-game event. Many players wondered, “When does Secrets of Azeroth end?”, as they raced to uncover hidden knowledge and unlock exclusive rewards. This event was, in a way, a return to Classic WoW’s roots, emphasizing the aspects so much loved by the majority of players – adventure, exploration, and puzzle-solving.

One of the most frequently asked questions since Dragonflight was released is “How to get to Under Root from Valdrakken?”. Valdrakken is the capital city of the Dragon Isles, and it serves as a hub for players. But getting to the Under Root – one of the new zones – requires using specific portals or flying on a dragon mount. Navigating the new zones became an integral part of the Dragonflight experience.

What’s Next

World of Warcraft continues to grow and evolve, and Blizzard has now learned the lessons from the past expansions to know what the gamers need in the next ones. The evolution of WoW for developers has been a journey of trial and error, experiments, listening to players’ feedback, and taking advantage of technological advancements. With each new expansion, Blizzard manages to keep both veterans and newcomers engaged and committed to the game by refining mechanics, expanding the map and lore, and adding a vast amount of new content. Whether you have known WoW since its ‘vanilla’ stage or have just jumped in during Dragonflight, one thing is certain – Azeroth will continue to evolve, offering new adventures, mysteries, and epic battles for years to come.
