Russian Military Commander For Ukraine War Replaced
Russia has replaced Sergei Surovikin the former military commander for the Ukraine war with Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov.
It was in the month of October 2022 when Gen. Sergei Surovikin was appointed as the new Russian military commander for the Ukraine war. Previously, he served as the head of Russian forces in Syria and earned a reputation as a cruel yet effective military commander. However, just after 3 months, Sergei Surovikin has been removed from his commander position.
Now Russia has appointed Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov as the head of the Russian military for the Ukraine war. To people’s knowledge, Gen Valery V. Gerasimov has served as the chief of the military general staff since 2012.
The announcement of Gen Valery V. Gerasimov taking the responsibility of military commander for the Ukraine war has been made by the Russian Defense Ministry.
Internal Power Struggle
As per the Institute for the Study of War, removing Sergei Surovikin from the position of military commander and appointing Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov as the new military head is all part of an “internal power struggle”.
If reports are to be believed, Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin wants to weaken the power and influence of some of the major authorities who are becoming significantly serious about the direction the Ukraine war is taking.
Appointing a new military commander was a thoughtful political action to make the Russian MoD stronger against challenges from the Russian pro-war bloggers and Sergei Surovikin.
